Edwardian 14kt Swiss Enamel Open Link Chain Necklace 17.5"

Swiss enameled pieces were commonly produced to be sold as souvenirs for Victorian travelers. A very fine type of enameling, this technique used very intricate detail and often portrayed scenic Swiss Alps villages with streams, mountains and wonderful homes and churches. These serene images were produced by first covering a piece of metal in a neutral enameled color. A wonderfully detailed picture was then painted on the enameled base and re-fired to set the image. A clear glaze was then applied to the image to preserve it. The pieces were often set in a hollow frame making them very light and comfortable to wear.

A wonderful Swiss enamel chain from the Edwardian (ca 1900s)era! Crafted in bright 14kt yellow gold, the piece is comprised of open oval links that graduate in size and connect to form a gorgeous flexible chain. An incredible black and white Swiss enamel pattern details the oval links around their openings. The applied enameling consists of curved inlaid black and white lines that blend seamlessly with bold gold outlines. The enameled links are linked together with smaller, oval, banded links. The length of this necklace makes it a fabulous stacking piece as it will sit closer to the base of the neck. The chain fastens together at the back with a simple 14kt spring ring. The chain is marked 585 on the backside of the center link. This chain is a magnificent and versatile piece that could be worn day or night, this chain would make a stunning addition to any collection!

Measurements: The entire length of the chain measures approximately 17.5" long. Each enamel link ranges in length from 1/2" to 3/4", with the largest links at the center.

Condition: The overall condition of the chain necklace is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the gold setting and the spring ring is secure and in good working order. Due to the intricate and delicate nature of Swiss enameling, and given the age of the piece, some of the enamel work shows wear when under close examination, however, it is not noticeable when worn, and does not detract from the overall beauty of the piece.
