Victorian Silver Plated Pocket Knife Match Safe
An interesting and unusual match safe from the Victorian (ca1880) period! This unique piece is silver plated and carries the shape of a realistic pocket knife with a fabulous repousse design. Both sides of the match safe display a textured surface with repousse veins that resemble rugged tree bark. On one side of the piece are two slivers that represent knife blades, giving the look of a real pocket knife, though the blades are purely decorative and remain sealed in place. The top of the match safe is hinged and opens to reveal a hollow, open compartment inside where matches were once stored to keep them safe and dry. On the top of the lid is a ridged surface that acts a striker, allowing the owner to easily start a flame. The plated silver surface has a wonderful natural patina which adds to the richness and depth to the image.
