Victorian Cut Steel Fringe Tassel Pendant Necklace

Cut steel jewelry originated in England in the 17th century and subsequently spread throughout Europe, eventually becoming a popular style of jewelry worn by members of high society during the Victorian era. Made of polished faceted steel studs, the pieces were cut by hand and then assembled and riveted onto a metal back. The faceted steel elements give this type of jewelry a subtle, metallic glitter that resembles cut gemstones. Motifs varied from the simple to the sublime, with multiple layers and densely packed studs. The time-consuming process and the artistry required to create cut steel jewelry made it very valuable and highly sought-after during the Victorian age, particularly to wear during the stage of "secondary mourning." Produced up until the turn of the 19th century, antique cut steel jewelry is now highly collectible.

This stunning pendant necklace is an example of cut steel jewelry from the Victorian (ca1880) era! This piece features a large tassel pendant, which is comprised of small cut steel beads. The tassel is topped by a dainty sterling silver cap, which marvelously contrasts the hue of the steel cut beads. The tassel is attached to a bail, which attaches the pendant to a lorgnette chain. The chain is crafted in sterling silver and features seven ellipse-shaped links that feature a simple "clover-like" cut-out design. A simply exceptional Victorian piece, this pendant necklace would make a special statement piece for the modern day woman!

Measurements: The tassel pendant is approximately 3" long, and the chain is 23" long. The smaller piece of chain from which the tassel drapes is 3 1/4" long.

Condition: The overall condition of the pendant is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the cut steel beads, which are intact and securely strung. The chain is intact and free from any damage. The spring ring clasp is secure and in working order.
