Victorian 14k Gutta Percha Carved Lion Bracelet

Gutta-percha is a genus of tropical trees native to the regions of Southeast Asia and northern Australasia. An inelastic natural latex material is produced from the sap of the trees which is also referred to as gutta-percha. The beneficial properties were discovered by Westerners in 1842, and the substance was initially used as an electrical insulator. A few years later gutta-percha became a popular material used to manufacture furniture and then mourning jewelry because it was easily carved and very resilient.

An unusual gutta-percha bracelet from the Victorian (ca1880s) era! This unique and stylish piece is made of hand-carved gutta-percha, and features 14k yellow gold accents. The bracelet is composed of two, identical hand carved links, which are connected by two ellipse-shaped jump rings. The links, which are carved to resemble two lions, feature intricate details on both their torsos and faces. Additionally, the mouth of each lion features a 14k bridle. A circular gutta-percha link, which depicts a three-dimensional floral motif and small fly is nestled between the two lions, and surrounded by a gold frame. The bracelet secures with a hidden push clasp. A very unique piece, this bracelet would look fantastic paired with other complementary bracelets or worn alone, and is perfect for daily wear!

Measurements: The inside of the bracelet (where your wrist would rest) measures slightly less than 2" wide and 2" tall. The surface of the bracelet measures 1" at its widest point.

Condition: The overall condition of the bracelet is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the gutta-percha or to the yellow gold accents. The push clasp is in good working condition.
